Volkswagen three-wheeler future in doubt

Volkswagen is considering pulling the plug on its wacky GX3 trike, which wowed crowds at the Los Angeles motor show at the start of the year.

VW insiders say that GX3 was progressing towards production and sales in mid-2007, but confusion over safety regulations in the US now means the GX3 faces the axe.

Legal wrangling over whether the GX3 is a car or motorcycle by safety legislators means it could too costly for VW to build the vehicle to meet car safety standards.

Lotus has been testing the GX3 in the UK and advising VW, but insiders at Volkswagen say the whole project may now have been in vain.
