Volvo trucks helps battle cancer in Norther Ireland
Northern Ireland charity Action Cancer are the first in Europe to order a Volvo FH with a Euro 5-compliant 13 litre engine. Recently launched to the media by the charity and sponsored by independent retailer SuperValu, the truck is part of a £650,000 investment in a state-of-the-art mobile cancer prevention and early detection unit designed to provide a comprehensive, effective and accesible service across Northern Ireland.
The 14-metre trailer, supplied by Brown’s Coachworks of Lisburn, has expanding sides, doubling the interior space, which houses digital breast screening equipment. The unit is capable of sending x-ray images directly to Consultant Radiologists for almost instant results, as well as counselling and complementary therapy rooms, hi-tech training suite, computer terminals and a supervised crèche.
Action Cancer Chief Executive Robin McRoberts explained: "The mobile cancer service is scheduled for official launch in September and will visit 200 locations, providing services for 10,000 people every year. We aim to reduce the 9,000 new cases of cancer each year in Northern Ireland, the ground-breaking new mobile will target both urban and remote rural locations, but specifically areas with low uptake rates for NHS screening."
He added, "We are delighted to have chosen Volvo as the vehicle supplier not only because of the quality of the product, but also because the engine will be a first because it is so environmentally friendly."
