The seemingly inexorable rise of Audi in the UK and the pioneering design and engineering that spearheaded it have been recognised this week by Autocar Magazine, which presented the brand with its coveted Car Company of the Year Award. Professor Dr Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management Audi AG, collected the award from Autocar editor Chas Hallett at a high profile event held on November 15th at the new Mercedes World facility in Brooklands. According to the editorial in the latest awards issue of the magazine (15th November), Audi has been honoured because “quite a few pretenders over the years have set out to best BMW and Mercedes-Benz…one bid - Audi’s - has succeeded.” It also backs up the decision by adding that ‘exhaustive’ testing of the Audi range by the Autocar team has proved that “its models now stand with the best.”

Dr Winterkorn took the opportunity not only to thank Chas Hallett and the Autocar team for recognising the brand’s achievements, but also to show his gratitude to Audi employees across the world, and specifically in the UK. “This award is for all Audi employees and not just those at our factory sites. A special thank you also goes to the team at Audi UK. They are always innovative and often a benchmark for other Audi importers,” he said.

The Chairman went on to emphasise the importance of the UK market to Audi: “The UK is our biggest European market outside Germany. In the last six years, Audi sales have doubled to over 85,000 units – UK customers think Audi is the hottest brand, too!” he concluded.

The Audi ascent in the UK began in earnest in 1995 when the A4 saloon was launched as the first genuinely viable alternative to the dominant German premium compact executives. In that year, the brand offered a choice of five models and recorded just over 25,000 sales.

Just over a decade later, Audi has conclusively cemented its position as the third German prestige marque with the help of an impressive roster of fifteen advanced models with a reputation for innovation, design flair and exceptional quality, the most recent of which being the much feted aluminium-bodied, mid-engined R8 sports car.
