New tyre regulations in Formula 1 racing will be put to the test on March 18, 2007 in Melbourne, Australia at the season’s opening race. Aiming to reduce cost and create a more level playing field, the motor sport governing body (FIA) has awarded Bridgestone Motorsport sole tyre supplier status for the 2008 to 2010 race seasons. The FIA has also introduced an obligatory use of two tyre compounds per race, adding pressure to team strategists to choose the correct tyre at the right time during the race. Bridgestone Motorsport officials say that alongside the engine and aerodynamics package of the car, the tyre is still considered one of the single most important factors in a car’s performance.
