Erich Schmitt, President of SEAT S.A., has presented a cheque for 123,000 Euros (approximately £83,000) to Shakira’s charity foundation. The sum was raised through a text-message draw where the exciting prize was a unique Leon Cupra whose colour and interior were designed by the singer herself. The cheque was presented on the occasion of the Barcelona Motor Show, to Dr Sara Gamba Fuentes, from the Colombian embassy in Spain.
SEAT has been promoting the Pies Descalzos (Bare Feet) Foundation as part of the brand’s sponsorship of Shakira’s European Tour earlier this year.
‘SEAT is a company with a big social commitment and I am very proud to present this cheque that will help improve the situation for displaced children in Colombia,’ commented Erich Schmitt.
‘The money will go to support the construction of a new school in Baranquilla, Colombia, the hometown of Shakira,’ said Dr Sara Gamba Fuentes. The school will take on 2,000 children, greatly improving the lives of families in Baranquilla.
The fundraising campaign included the option to donate 1 Euro (or £1 in the UK) via an SMS message, which gave the sender the chance to win the unique Leon Pies Descalzos. An impressive 89,227 SMS messages were received from all participating countries in Europe – a tremendous involvement from fans that Shakira is particularly happy about.
Also at the Show, Berthold Krüger, Executive Vice President for Sales and Marketing at SEAT, handed over the keys of the prize car to its winner Lucía Morán. Lucía comes from Madrid, and is studying to become a primary school teacher.
‘I never expected to win the car when I sent the SMS,’ said Lucía Morán. ‘I simply wanted to help the cause, being a big Shakira fan.’
