The BRABUS models of the new smart fortwo are ready to hit the road. With a reengineered 72 kW/98 bhp three cylinder turbo engine the smart fortwo BRABUS and the smart fortwo BRABUS Xclusive continue to boast low fuel consumption of just 5.2 litres per 100 kilometres, yet they have 30 percent more power than the predecessor model. CO2 emissions stand at 124 grams per kilometre. The sporty two-seater accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 155 km/h. Prices in Germany range from € 16,490 to € 22,430 (ex factory) depending on the equipment line and body type.

The new smart fortwo, priced from £6,900 on the road, goes on sale in Britain on 15 September. The new car is even more comfortable, even more agile, even safer and even more ecological than its predecessor. With fuel consumption of just 3.3 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC) and emissions of 88 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre the new smart fortwo cdi is the most economical production car worldwide. A full tank of fuel costs around €38.00 (assuming a litre price of €1.15) and 33 litres of fuel will take the 33 kW/45 bhp two-door car approximately 1,000 kilometres – for example theoretically from central Berlin to the outskirts of Paris without refuelling.

A Slovenian man survived a fall from the twelfth floor of a block of flats when he landed on a Smart car 120 feet below. Darko Mirinovic, 25, is being treated in hospital in the capital Ljubljana for broken arms, legs and ribs - but doctors at the Clinical Centre Hospital said it was amazing he had survived at all. Saso Jovanovic, who owns the Smart car which broke the man's fall, said: I didn't know whether to be happy or sad, he ruined my car, but it saved his life.

At the Geneva Motor Show (06 – 18 March 2007) smart will be presenting the two BRABUS variants of the new smart fortwo to the public for the first time. Rated at 72 kW / 98 bhp, the smart fortwo BRABUS and smart fortwo BRABUS Xclusive have more than 30 percent more engine power than the BRABUS variant of the predecessor model. At the same time the low consumption and low CO2 emissions demonstrate that this does not have to come at a cost to the environment and customers' wallets. In addition, the two BRABUS variants boast an extremely low weight to power ratio: at just 7.8 kg/bhp this is 24 percent lower than that of the previous BRABUS variant.

For the very first time on US soil: the new smart fortwo, celebrating its USA premiere at this year’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit (January 7 to 21, 2007). The new smart fortwo will be available in the USA beginning in the first quarter of 2008. The car shown in Detroit is an European version of the new smart fortwo. Model lines to be available in the United States will be announced at later date.

At "smartville", the production plant for the smart fortwo in Hambach, France, production of the new smart fortwo has got off to a successful start. The first vehicle produced in the pure equipment line has white bodypanels and a black tridion safety cell. Since the launch of the previous model in October 1998 more than 770,000 smart fortwo have been produced in Hambach. The last vehicle of the previous model series rolled off the production line at the end of November 2006. The time up to the New Year was used to switch the production to the new model.

Not yet at dealerships and already a museum exhibit - those who would like to see the new smart fortwo before it is launched in April 2007 now have an opportunity to do so. From 06 December 2006 to 14 January 2007 the new smart fortwo will be part of the "smart story" exhibition at the Mercedes-Benz museum in Stuttgart. Visitors to the exhibition will see that the design language of the new smart fortwo is a consistent evolution of the original shape. This applies to the design, and it also applies to the engineering of the new car.

smart will be offering an exclusive special model of the new smart fortwo to coincide with the market launch in April 2007: the "edition limited one" shows that, like its predecessor, exclusive equipment is available for the new smart fortwo and there are lots of opportunities for individualisation. The "edition limited one" smart fortwo will be presented for the first time at the Bologna Motor Show (05 - 17 December 2006). At the same time this will be the world premiere for the new smart fortwo at a show. With more than 210,000 smart fortwo sold to date, Italy is the largest market for smart.
