Since its arrival in the UK in autumn 2006, the new Volvo S80 executive saloon’s distinctive characteristics of Scandinavian design and innovative technology as well as enhanced levels of ride quality, passenger space and comfort are proving successful in meeting the demands of business customers.
The Volvo new XC70, part of the Small Premium Utility segment, combines elements of a coupé with those of an SUV with its estate car’s functional versatility and the XC model’s All Wheel Drive and capacity. The model is available with a six-cylinder petrol or five-cylinder turbodiesel engine. In the new model, the electronically controlled all wheel drive from Haldex of Sweden can be supplemented with the Four-C active chassis with three driving settings. Features such as Hill Descent Control and ventilated seats also contribute to a comfortable driving experience. Sales will start at the end of August, starting in Scandinavia, with other markets to follow gradually during the rest of 2007.
When the first XC model from Volvo Cars took to the roads in 1996, it was not only an immediate sales success; it also carved out an entirely new Cross Country segment. Now the third generation of the Volvo XC70 steps into the spotlight at the Geneva Motor Show. With its original recipe intact - but now with added luxury and in an even more capable package than ever. At its debut just over ten years ago, Volvo Cars expected XC sales of 15,000 cars. That became 17,500 when American buyers, above all, discovered that they could have everything that an SUV could do, but in a true premium car with a distinct Volvo feel. The term "crossover" was born.

Volvo Technology Transfer AB investing in Chemrec AB, a company that has developed a technology for the production of synthesis gases, an important component in the production of alternative fuels of various types. This investment is part of the Volvo Group’s drive to help speed up the development of renewable fuels for the heavy vehicle industry. Swedish company Chemrec has developed a technology that specialises in the production of synthesis gas, a first stage in the production of alternative fuels. At its pilot plant in Piteå in northern Sweden, Chemrec produces synthesis gas from black liquor, which is a residual product from the pulp industry. Today this black liquor is incinerated in soda furnaces where the chemicals are recovered and where the energy that is generated has a relatively low efficiency rating. By instead gasifying the black liquor, what comes out is a number of by-products including synthesis gas, which has a higher efficiency rating. With this synthesis gas it is possible to utilise known techniques to extract vehicle fuels such as bio-diesel, hydrogen gas, synthetic diesel and DME.

Volvo unveiled its compact XC60 SUV, and bosses of Ford’s Swedish luxury brand said the car signalled the start of a more “pumped-up” look for the company’s cars. Volvo Cars design director Steve Mattin said the car contained “the DNA of future Volvos”. He added: “We’re about to elevate Volvo’s DNA to new levels by pumping up the volume.” This involves a bolder interpretation of the Volvo grille, with a large logo across the diagonal band, plus a more distinctive rear end with VOLVO spelled out in large letters and an innovative split tailgate that refines the one fitted to the C30 hatchback.
