As a part of the transportation arrangements for the Beijing Olympics, a 50-unit fleet of hybrid vehicles co-developed with Ricardo is being provided by Chery Automobile Company Ltd. Known as the “Olympics Green Messengers”, these vehicles are some of China’s first hybrid vehicles and will go into full production in the months following the games.

Lap runs on the Nürburgring Nordschleife in Germany’s Eifel region are often cancelled due to rain. But the wet weather didn’t stop Nissan from taking its X-Trail fuel cell vehicle for a spin on the course recently, making Nissan the first automaker to record an FCV lap on the famous race track.

Toyota announced today that it is to start production of a Camry Hybrid model in Australia and Thailand as part of its on-going efforts to develop the popularity of hybrid vehicles worldwide. In Australia the new Camry Hybrid will be going into production in 2010 at Toyota Motor Corporation Australia’s Altona factory near Melbourne, with an annual target of 10,000 units. In Thailand the centre for production is Toyota Motor Thailand’s (TMT) Gateway Plant, where the aim is for 9,000 vehicles to be built each year from 2009.

Toyota has developed a new fuel cell hybrid vehicle that travels more than double the distance of its predecessor model, increasing the maximum cruising range from 205 miles to 515 miles. Limited cruising ranges of previous fuel cell systems presented obstacles to widespread fuel cell vehicle use but the ‘Toyota FCHV-adv’ (fuel cell hybrid vehicle-advanced) improves the cruising range with its newly designed high-performance Toyota FC Stack.
