For the first time in 14 years, the legendary Goodwood Festival of Speed will not clash with any major motorcycle races, which means one of the best turnouts from the biking world that the event has ever seen. BMW Motorrad UK will once again play a part in the annual celebration, which takes place on 7,8 and 9 July at Goodwood House near Chichester, East Sussex. The main attraction at the Festival of Speed is the hillclimb event, which is held throughout the weekend on a 1.16-mile course on parkland roads in the grounds of Goodwood House. Traditionally, star riders (and drivers) on historical bikes (and cars) race along a tree-lined avenue, before climbing a steep and narrow estate road to the top of the hill overlooking the South Downs.

With no major motorcycle racing date-clash for the first time in fourteen years, Goodwood has assembled a mouth-watering array of bikes and riders from around the world for this year’s Festival of Speed (7.8.9 July), representing motorcycling’s greatest championships. From the world of Grand Prix, 21-year-old Australian sensation Casey Stoner will ride his 240 bhp+ Honda RC211V up the famous Goodwood hill, while fellow GP regulars, Brit James Ellison, and Aussie Chris Vermulen, will ride Kenny Roberts’ 1980 championship-winning Yamaha OW48 and Barry Sheene’s 1975 Suzuki XR-14. Californian legend of the 1980s and 90s Randy Mamola will demonstrate the unique two-seater Ducati GP bike, and celebrated number one Brit (Irish) Grand Prix rider Jeremy McWilliams will be tackling the hill. Multiple British Champion Ron Haslam will be reunited with the Honda Elf 3 he rode in the early 1990s, and rare bikes from MV Agusta, BMW and Gilera will supplement the category.

As summer days approach, motorcycle enthusiasts expect to use their Harleys, Kawasakis and Hondas more often and for longer periods of time than they did a year ago. Gas prices and a strong passion for riding are two of the main driving factors behind the increased desire to ride, according to a new survey by Nationwide Mutual Insurance.
