In 1978 Bosch made history when the first electronically-controlled antilock braking system, ABS, rolled off the production line. This groundbreaking technology was to become the basis for all modern brake regulating systems and Bosch systems based on ABS, such as the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) and Traction Control System (TCS), have also successfully established themselves in the market. Today, around three quarters of all vehicles produced worldwide are fitted with ABS and other brake regulating systems.

The FIA Institute and Toyota have combined technology and expertise to help improve safety in high speed racecar accidents. Toyota has been using a computer simulation system, called Total Human Model Safety (THUMS), to help it design safer production vehicles for several years. THUMS is a virtual representation of the human body that can provide Toyota engineers with precise data about the injuries real people might suffer in different kinds of vehicle accidents.

As the hay fever season sets in, approximately 24 million motorists (72 per cent) will be affected by distracting symptoms - including itchy and watery eyes, blocked or runny noses and frequent sneezing - when behind the wheel. The research commissioned by esure car insurance Esure estimated that in excess of 2 million UK motorists (7 per cent) have had an accident, near miss, or momentarily lost control of their car as a result of sneezing while driving. And it's not just those behind the wheel who need to be wary of hay fever symptoms, in-car passengers were found to contribute to more than an estimated 670,0003 accidents, with sudden sneezing distracting the driver.

Advanced systems which alert the driver if a tyre is losing pressure while the car is in motion are providing Ford customers with safer motoring. Ford's sophisticated tyre pressure monitoring systems detect when a tyre is deflating, and trigger in-car warning systems that enable the driver to stop and check. Even regular tyres checks can fail to reveal if a tyre is damaged or already punctured. Ford's automated system is able to monitor the tyres at all times when the vehicle is in use and can help to draw the driver’s attention to a problem before it becomes a safety issue.

The start of series production of Continental's sensor system for the avoidance of rear-end collisions at city driving speeds represents an important milestone for the international automotive supplier's all-round ContiGuard(R) safety system. The sensor system monitors the road ahead of the vehicle and is networked with the braking system. It automatically applies the brakes if there is a risk of a rear-end collision and the driver either fails to react or if his reactions are too slow.
