Thatcham, the UK’s insurance organisation renowned for conducting research and development to promote safer cars, recently invited media, insurance companies and government agencies to a demonstration of three selected new technologies that can mitigate or prevent low-speed accidents. The one that made the greatest impression on all who attended was Volvo City Safety, which will be a standard feature on the new Volvo XC60.

The all-new 2009 Nissan Murano, on sale in the US and coming to Europe late 2008 has earned a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). When testing nine mid-sized SUV models, IIHS found the Murano to be the best overall performer in front, side and rear crash test evaluations.

That is why Volvo's cars are tested under the most extreme conditions from Arizona's blisteringly hot desert to the biting cold of the Arctic north. "Our cars have to be able to withstand ambient temperatures between -40 and +60 degrees C. Our aim is to create the best possible car for all climates," says Jan Inge Eliasson, head of the Complete Vehicles Testing department at Volvo Cars.

The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class has passed the European NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme) crash tests with flying colours. The Saloon has therefore been awarded five stars and, according to the Euro NCAP organisation, is one of the safest cars available on the market.

The all-new Mazda2 supermini has been awarded a 5-Star safety rating in the latest round of Euro NCAP (European New Car Assessment Programme) crash tests. In terms of occupant protection, the new Mazda2 proved itself to be among the safest cars in the small car segment – earning the maximum 5-Stars for adult protection, plus a class-leading 4-Stars for child protection and a competitive 2-Stars for pedestrian protection.

Laguna II was the first vehicle to ever achieve a five-star rating in the passive safety assessment tests carried out by the independent body, Euro NCAP. It was a result that took the car into a new era. Today, it’s the turn of New Laguna to achieve the same maximum five-star rating. With a total of 36 points from a possible 37[1] , one of the highest scores ever recorded in the tests, the newcomer even outperformed its predecessor to once again highlight Renault's expertise in the realm of passive safety.

Mazda Motor Corporation has announced that the new Mazda2 was awarded the five-star maximum rating in the European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) adult occupant protection safety test. This is the second five-star score from Euro NCAP awarded to a Mazda vehicle; the first was given to the Mazda5 (known as the Premacy in Japan) in September 2005.
