The 2008 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable will arrive in showrooms this summer bearing Top Safety Pick ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the government’s highest available five-star ratings in all crash test categories. The IIHS' "Top Safety Pick" rating can only be earned by vehicles that achieve the best-available safety performance in frontal, side and rear collisions and offer electronic stability control. In addition to being the only large family cars to merit IIHS' Top Safety Pick rating, these sedans stand alone for also earning five-star driver and passenger crash test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Ford truck drivers are looking to make roads safer for cyclists by joining forces with Transport for London (TfL). Ford is supporting TfL's "Share the Road" campaign, which is designed to encourage cooperation between all road users, by displaying signs on 2,000 Ford trailers warning cyclists not to undertake the truck in front. Every year thousands of accidents happen when cyclists try to pass on the inside of a large vehicle turning left. Chris Woodmore, manager of Ford's Transport Operations, said: "We are delighted to work with Transport for London on this initiative. Ford trailers travel more than 10 million miles every year and present an ideal opportunity to get this message across to cyclists where it will be noticed."

Today all passenger vehicles have some form of airbag. In many cases airbags are even selling points. Statistics support the value of these safety devices. According to the National Highway and Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), the lives of nearly 20,000 passengers have been saved directly attributed to airbags, since 1987. Volvo had worked with airbags and automatic seat belts for many years (the world's first three-point seatbelt was also a Volvo innovation). As early as the 1970s, Volvo engineers were experimenting with the airbag as a way of reducing fatalities, even producing a fleet of cars with airbags as part of their research. At the same time, the U.S. the government was struggling with legislation regarding the use of seat belts.
