10 Most Beautiful Cars of All Time
« Back to articlePosted by Brent Castle (2 years ago)
Enzo and Ettore are rolling in their graves. The Dino and the Veyron? What about the 250 GTO Berlinetta and the Atlantic?
These were some pretty terrible choices.
Posted by Pete (2 years ago)
How can you forget the Alfa Rome 8C Competizione. That car should be at the top of the list as the sexiest most beautiful car ever thought of.
Posted by skyline (2 years ago)
8C Competizione is still the concept right? I would like to see only production cars on the list...
Posted by Chris (2 years ago)
The Dino I approve of, but the Veyron? come on guys, the Veyron is far from beautiful. While I admit the power and performance of it is nothing short of sexy, the looks leave something to be desired.
And gah, the new Eleanor is overrated, IMHO.
Last but not least, what about the Lamborghini Miura? That was one gorgeous automobile.
Posted by (2 years ago)
A Mustang and a Rolls Royce??? WTF???
Think of all the really beautiful cars you left out to put those 2 monstrosities in. Lamborghini Miura, a stack of Ferraris, a couple of Porsches, Alfas, the list goes on.
Posted by BTP (2 years ago)
The humble (for this list) Volvo P1800 has
perfect lines coupled with an insanely reliable
machine underneath. 750,000 miles on mine.
What could be more 'beautiful' than that?
Posted by P L (2 years ago)
Where's Spains Pegaso Type 105
Posted by dhw (2 years ago)
Agree this really a pathetic list.
And if you want to include the XK-E, at least pick the roadster. I would have liked to see the Porsche 911 GT1 (of the 90s, not the forthcoming one) or maybe the Carrera GT.
Posted by (2 years ago)
If this had been some kind of top 10 classic cars or something, some of these entries might have made sense. As a list of beauties, several of these are actually hideous. There is a difference between vintage appeal and eye appeal. Way too many much better looking cars left out. This selection can ONLY be explained via the snob/elitist factor.

No GT 40, no Lamborghini Miura, no credibility
Posted by TAO (2 years ago)
That modified Mustang isn't just ugly, it's thermonuclear ugly. Wake up in the morning next to it and run out screaming ugly. Use a pointy stick to blind yourself ugly. The perfect example of the vehicle for those with too much money and too little taste.
Posted by Rence (2 years ago)
Have always loved the Talbot Lago. Many good choices, a few horrendous ones. The Rolls is especially butt ugly, in every sense. That Mustang isn't even the best looking Mustang, although it's from the same era. The Veyron has no style at all, really - it's the same basic idea as an Audi TT or new VW Bug.
Posted by Jon (2 years ago)
I really like Cords, myself, from like 1937. Gorgeous in silver.
Posted by Rob (2 years ago)
Agree with you on Cord Jon. And I call bullshit on this list for not having Duesenberg either:

If you haven't been to the Auburn / Cord / Duesenberg museum, you have truly missed something.
Posted by Unca Mike (2 years ago)
Any year Corvette up to 1967.
Posted by Unca Mike (2 years ago)
But I guess the question didn't have a "money is no object" tag.
Hell, throw in Bentley/RR
But I'd have to go along with the Auburn/Cord/Duesenberg
1930's, right. Movie star stuff.
Posted by Unca Mike (2 years ago)
If you people ever go to Las Vegas, check out the car museum at the Imperial Palace.
It's free.
Lotsa nice cars there.
Posted by Another Government Employee (2 years ago)
The Jag coupe actually is a good choice.
The Dino is a good Ferrari representative, although I would have chosen the Daytona.
Swap the Shelby for a DeTomaso Pantera
And I think I would have chosen a '57 Thunderbird.
Another not so obvious choice is a BMW 507.
Posted by Matt (2 years ago)
A lot of beautiful, elegant cars
But that "GT500" from the gone in sixty seconds remake is a cheap, "movie magic", peice of crap. At least pick a real GT350 or GT500. Maybe you could consider the GT40 instead
Posted by Unca Mike (2 years ago)
Just a second.
Didn't want to mislead anyone.
The Imperial Palace car museum actually has an admission price of $8 US.
But you can get free coupons from several Las Vegas magazines, and the last time I went there was a gal handing out free admission tickets.
It's kinda like a "loss leader" to get you into the casino.
Imperial Palace is one of the older places on the strip.
Posted by msjz12 (2 years ago)
1962 Lincoln Continental
Posted by Unca Mike (2 years ago)
The '57 T-Bird was a nice looking car.
But it had one problem.
Even with the 312 it was underpowered.
A '57 Vette with a 283 would blow the doors off.
And that's with the stock engine, not even 2X4.
Posted by GunsmithKat (2 years ago)
1967 Lamborghini Miura
Posted by RichZ (2 years ago)
Only 2 of the 10 cars named would even be up for consideration on my top 10. The 30 mercedes and that lago. Without the best looking Amrican production autombile ever designed -- a '53 Studebaker Coupe -- the list is a total joke.
Posted by dino (2 years ago)
What about the <a href="http://www.texasrainmaker.com"&g
t;1974 AMC Pacer</a>?
Posted by Sasha (2 years ago)
The Miura and the Alfa mentioned in the comments are some seriously silly-looking cars.
Give me a Cord 812 any day, over anything on this list. Okay, maybe not the 1930 Mercedez-Benz. That I'd have to think about.
Posted by Alfonso (2 years ago)
Oldsmobile Aurora pre-2001 that car got some sexy curves and pretty fast to boot and does'nt bankrupt ya.
Posted by (2 years ago)
umm... Excalibur...? 1939 Caddilac...??
Posted by denk (2 years ago)
So close...most of the cars I absolutely adore (I was very pleased that the Talbot-Lago was included, as no Beautiful Cars list can be without that), however the DB4, while being an awesome car, is too similar to the E type in style, except the massive whaleshark-like grill.
The Phantom? Boxy cars aren't usually seen as beautiful for a reason.
Dino? GT40 or Miura, please.
Eleanor? For once, from somebody who actually likes extra flash on cars, the Eleanor goes too far. How about a Plymouth Barracuda?
I vote for the Tokky Kaira ZZII to be on that list:

Posted by Mike (2 years ago)
Absolutely love the Dino but if only 1 Ferrari should be on the list, then the 250 GTO should have been picked. Missing the Porsche Speedster 356 too
Posted by (2 years ago)
Congratulations for taking the plunge. Some beautiful cars there. Most important, you've opened a worthwhile discussion. Nitpicking and all.
I have to say you've chosen a few truly ugly ones, too (that awful Mustang, the Rolls, etc).
I agree with Terry. A big difference between vintage appeal and eye appeal. Forget the icons, although it's hard for most people to look strictly at design without the associations. Or as he put it, the 'elite, snob' factor.
What about the 54 Corvette (simpler/more beautiful than all its predecessors), Porsche Spyder, and even (yes) the Studebaker, and a number of Ferraris I think are more beautiful than the Dino?
I never "got" the E-type mystique. I like flamboyant, flamboyant's good. As long as there is some design restraint. But the Jag never looked quite like a car to me. Extravagant design over function. Bob

cool list
Posted by jozza (2 years ago)
The Veyron and Phantom have no place on that list, they are only there because you think they are cool. I haven't seen the 63 Corvette mentioned yet, which I think is easily one of the most beautiful cars of all time.

This is a joke. The Zonda is gross, the mustang isn't exactly beautiful. Where is the BMW Z8!
Posted by Davor (2 years ago)
As many have stated before your list is at least questinable. To put together a real list of the 10 most beautiful cars would be very hard task since all of us have our favorites and since there are much more than 10 of them which by all standards deserve to be on the list of the most beautiful. But you, the authors of this list, show lack of any real automotive history knowledge and further more sense of style and are in fact just a bunch of ignorants.

Car Wars II: The Phantom [design] Menace
Are you kidding me? The phantom is the single ugliest SUV-wannabe design to come out of the boys in britain in their history. Its a complete pussy-footing, c0ck-sucking attempt to sell cars to lame hiphop fanboys with too much money and too little taste. I'm not going to complain about cars that aren't on the list, coming up with a top 10 is damn near impossible, but the phantom!?!?
Posted by tf (2 years ago)
58 corvette.

That's "goutte d'eau" with two t's in the "goutte".
Posted by msplot (2 years ago)
Great idea for an article, and nice cars!
Now learn the difference between "its" and "it's", dolts.
And if you ever write "its' " again, I'm banning you from the Internet. Last warning.

Sexiest, which I am not sure anyone has been bold enough to do.

You left out Duesenberg, Delahaye, Cord, 67 Corvette, Bentley Aerosedan...but you included the Rolls (an abortion of it's former self), Mustang, Pagani, Ferrari Dino (should have chosen 365GTB Daytona)...and when referring to the XKE, you call Malcolm Sayer "the man to blame for this beauty"...even your grammar is incorrect!
Posted by Steve (2 years ago)
Asking car guys to define a 10 best list is a quick way to start a heated debate. No matter what your taste in vehicles are, this is a list of automobiles that have merit for a variety of reasons. Would I name the same cars? Probably not, but that doesn't diminish a list that someone else created.
Posted by ScouserByChoice (2 years ago)
The Merc has to be the inspiration for one of the Batmobiles.
The Mustang is not Beautiful but The Beast(I'd still like one if anyone is giving theirs away)
The Cuda is a truly beautiful car as are the Vette's mentioned.
But my favourite would have to be a 57 Chevy Bel Air.
Beauty is in the eye of the Beholder.........so just remember everyone is different and so will their idea of beauty.
Posted by Beene (2 years ago)
No Maserati Ghibli? You're really serious about the Bugatti?
Posted by SKetch (2 years ago)
I've always thought the E-Type is very overrated. To me, the proportions are very awkward, particularly the size and position of the greenhouse and the way the wheels are so far inboard. I think the Aston Martin looks 100 times better. I don't think that ugly-ass mustang belongs on the list, either. And there are a lot of better Rolls choices than the current Phantom. But that's just my opinion.
Posted by Reverborama (2 years ago)
Hmm... the '53 Studebaker Starliner hardtop is widely regarded as the most beautiful car ever mass produced. Can't understand how you missed that.
Posted by BTP (2 years ago)
No Delahaye ?
(and TAO is right, the longer I look at the
Mustang, the uglier it gets...)

Italdesign Alfa Romeo Scighera

htm
really belongs on this list aswell in my opinion!
Posted by Ron G (2 years ago)
"This car became more famous than ever after the Gone in 60 Seconds movie, where it got its name - Eleanor." What a joke! "Eleanor" didn't even exist prior to that lame movie, duhhh! Shelby is just cashing in, again. Missing from the list; GT-40, Mangusta, Miura, Cobra Daytona, Apollo GT & 67 GT-500 (un-eleanor).
Posted by Uhhh.. (2 years ago)
Man those are some ugly cars... (not joking) I'm sure they were great for "their time" with the technologies they had, but speaking objectively, some of them are even repulsive. That Eleanor.. Looks like some riceboy hooked up with chico from "El Pimpo my Ride" and had at it, lol.
Posted by Hammsailor (2 years ago)
NO Mustang belongs in that group. The Shelby Cobra should replace it.
Posted by Hammsailor (2 years ago)
Try to take on a Z6 Vette with that G40 and you're going to get your doors blown off! The G40 uses a blower to get its performance. Put a blower at 7 lbs on a Z6 and you won't even see it pass you.
Posted by gak (2 years ago)
Based upon the comments, it shows that "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". I was at a concours event last week, and the best of show was a beautiful 1937 Bugatti. It gets my vote.
Posted by you're crazy (2 years ago)
The Phantom is a hideous slab of beef, and a disproportionate one at that. It is supremely ugly.
Posted by Sam (2 years ago)
Clearly beauty is in the eye of the beholder... The Porsche Speedster would have topped my list.
Posted by hyatt (2 years ago)
I have seen them all...but I would have to say
the Sexy Dino is the only one I would put on the list..hey just look at how many recommendations and comments it is actually getting on this board...you would have to agree considering the year it was designed and built..talking about ahead of its time, not even one car today looks better than the Dino..Heck, I still remember the first and only one I saw 20 years ago and I am still think about it..I definitely pick the Dino over all of them..
Posted by Hammsailor (2 years ago)
BUT, the GT40 is an exquisite-looking car and, evidently, handles exceedingly well.
Posted by Juan Renteria (2 years ago)
your selection was great , in my opinion you missed the Citroën DS, I think was the revolutionary car on 50's, thanks for the cahnce to express my opinion Juan from mexico city
Posted by Ivan (2 years ago)
what about Pontiac Aztek ??? ( that was joke )
Posted by Steve (1 year 11 months ago)
Lexus SC430 is the most beautiful current car, except for the retarded looking rear seats. It also drives like a slug.
Posted by Pinin (1 year 11 months ago)
Ferrari 250 GTO
007 DB5 or DB9 Volante
Bugatti Atlantic
Bentley Continental T
RR Cornish
Porsche 550 Spider
Ford GT40
Lancia Stratos
Lambo Miura
Posted by Pinin (1 year 11 months ago)
And Mercedes 280 SL pagoda.
Posted by Rex (1 year 11 months ago)
yes, well, I would say the 300SL is the nicest there, but Eleanor is butt-ugly, and no I'm not someone who doesn't understand that muscle cars are not ugly - they are beautiful, menacing and powerful-looking at the same time. I am THE muscle car enthusiast. I would have gone for a '68 G.T. 500 with the restyled front end. I would say the best looking car of all time is a '67 Pontiac Firebird - PMD got that car spot-on and the front end is gorgeous.
Posted by Rex (1 year 11 months ago)
Dino? hell no Veyron? NO WAY!!!!!! - look at the bloody door handles - utter cr*p!! The Phantom should be swapped for a Silver Cloud.
Posted by Richard (1 year 10 months ago)
Some of the most beautiful cars ever made are U.S. production models from the mid 1960's. Take a look at a '65 Pontiac GTO, a '66 Ford Thunderbird Landau, and a car that forty years later still looks futuristic; the '66 Buick Riviera. For a good looking luxury nameplate I'll really go out on a limb here and cast my vote for the 1967 Imperials (Chrysler) in any body style. Forget the Rolls Phanton with its kit car headlamps.
Posted by bad88irocz (1 year 7 months ago)
I just have one Question.....Where are the Camaros?.....Corvettes....Lambos?.....This site left out some of the most beutiful cars....Take a plymoth Barracuda for example....Barrett jackson auction just sold one for half a million......so i think this site needs to rethink their ideas of what a beautiful car is and face reality.......AstonMartons are ugly as fuck.......The eleanor was a **riced** out version of the 67 mustang......common!!!!!!!.......do ur research......change ur list to real*** cars.....then well see......:P
Posted by Sam (1 year 7 months ago)
i'm sorry but for me it has to be... all the way, the buggatti veyron... I would rather have this car than any single item in the world... bar-none
Posted by 67GT500 (1 year 7 months ago)
Finally a list that included the GT500. I would also include the Nissan 300zx TT. It won so many awards and was a milestone when it first release by Japanese standards.
Posted by bfam4t6 (1 year 6 months ago)
Ferrari 250GTO
Posted by glues (1 year 6 months ago)
There are so many beutiful classics: I am happy that someone mentioned the Cord, Auburn and 507 BMW.
Nobobdy remembered the ISO GRIFO though. It is an absolutely classical beauty. I am thinking of some Maseratis (MEXICO, Ghibli)too.
There where so many Pininfarina and Bertone beauties in the Sixties! I do not understand how people always love the Dino. In fact it was one of the most boring Ferraris before 75. Look at a some classic Ferrari like 275 GTB or the unbelievable Superamericas!
Porsches might be good cars, but the 911 looks like a flattened beetle. I must apologise: it is uglier than any beetle ever!
I think that there are also many beauties from Detroit or England (Aston Martins of the Sixties and seventies).
Look at some classic designs of the thirties to fifties! Italian, french or american. How the hell can people choose an overweight monster as this Bentley. (There where some nice Bentleys in the past).
I admitt that nearly all my favoutite cars are from the chrome age and more than thirty years old.
Posted by glues (1 year 6 months ago)
Rolls Royce not Bentley! Sorry!
Yes to the Miura!
Pagani and Bugatti are shurely fast! But are they as beautiful as they are fast?
If there is only one US Car:
There where many nice finned beauties in the late Fifties or some remarkable Corvettes or Buicks in the Sixties.
(By the way: There where also prettier Mustangs)!
Posted by Elseone (1 year 6 months ago)
Some cars to add:
Maserati Ghibli
Ford GT
BMW 507
Cord (any cord will do, just a beautiful car)
Auburn Boattail
Lamborghini Miura
Lamborghini Gallardo
Ford Mustang gt350
Bugatti Atlantic
Ferrari 575 Zagato
1967 Corvette
1953 Corvette
Delahaye Pourtout
Rolls Round door
1965 Aston Martin DB9
Posted by Alex Van Haaff (1 year 6 months ago)
If they were going to go for a Mustang-type car, screw the GT500, they should have gone with the 1977 Aston Martin V8 Vantage.
And if they were to go for a Bugatti, they should've gone with the 1927 Bugatti Type 41 Royale, the 1939 Bugatti Type 57C, 1936 Bugatti 57SC Atlantic.
MY Top 10:
1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 B Corto Touring Spyder
1965 Alfa Romeo TZ2
1939 Aston Martin Lagonda Rapid
1937 Cadillac V16 Series 37-90 Hartmann Cabrio
1937 Delage D8-120 S Pourtout Aéro Coupé
1958 Ferrari 412 S
1938 Hispano-Suiza H6C Dubonnet Xenia Streamliner
1938 Horch 853A Erdmann
2007 Spyker C12 LaTurbie
and
the upcoming 2008 Morgan Aeromax Coupe
(To add an 11th... Since it's only a concept:
the 2007 Maybach Exelero Coupé Concept)

Definately the e-type
Pure genius designed by eye, not a computer in sight
Posted by faisal (1 year 3 months ago)
Are you guys completely nuts? A list like this without the Lamborghini Miura has no credibility.
Posted by Vu (8 months 20 days ago)
How can veyron be added to the list? I think you're caught up on the illusion created by its price tag. Yeah, the car is fast, but it looks like a dung beetle. That 1930's mercedes is gorgeous tho
Posted by sicksteve (8 months 17 days ago)
'63-'65 Riviera?

for american cars-- the Shelby GT-500????
'66 Tornado
The Cord
Coke-bottle shaped Riviera's ('66'70) influencing the Mako Shark '68-'82 Corvette.
I see this list as having definite anti-american sentiment
the new Rolls Phaeton??? I'm sorry, Cadillac seville "bustleback" of '80-'85 loks better....
what about a Jag XJ 120?
Posted by Sam (8 months 6 days ago)
Duesenburg SSJ, 1953 Studebaker post coupe,
1955 Porsche 550 Spider, 1956 Austin Healy 100S,
1953 Buick Skylark, 1962 XKE 2 place coupe, Talbot Lago, 1970 Ferrari Daytona coupe, Alfa Romeo BAT concept car, 1950's Pegaso coupes, the Count Trossi 1930 Mercedes-Benz, & a # 11, like the Trossi Mercedes, in a class of its own, Heinz's 1938 Phantom Corsair.
