Ferrari 275 GTB driven by Formula 1 driver through Paris at 140MPH (video)
« Back to articlePosted by icce (2 years 7 months ago)
wow, how did he blow through all those red lights at that speed and not get into an accident?
Posted by bmw (2 years 7 months ago)
he's formula 1 driver :)
Posted by saab (2 years 7 months ago)
note the 'morning' part.. probably like, 5:30AM on a Sunday morning.. if you notice too, it took him a long time to go down the champs elysees after passing the arc de triomphe.. so chances are, he wasnt going THAT fast in the more populated areas, but just stayed in 2nd so it sounded like he was tearing it up. then again, not THAT fast is like, 80+, lol, and the screaching tires are a good indicator of that.. either way, that rocked.
Posted by greez (2 years 7 months ago)
Wow this is pretty cool.
Posted by CRious (2 years 7 months ago)
Idiot. They shoud be shot.
Posted by aknightwhosezni (2 years 7 months ago)
this is OLD i have it on dvd... he was later arrested for producing the video but was let go because of lack of evidence proving that it was actually him driving... you just see him get out of the car and go to his girl...
Posted by aknightwhosezni (2 years 7 months ago)
lol i didnt read the story under it... i know... i should just go play in traffic... sorry.. :p
Posted by Maisis' Rx-8 (2 years 7 months ago)
That was truely bad ass... Very impressive when done by a Formula 1 race car driver. Hopefully there are not amatures that are going to attempt to recreate that little episode.
Very awesome though!!

Thats is one hell of a driver, Excellent vid
Posted by vid (2 years 7 months ago)
The last few minutes seem to be the inspiration for GT 4 and Burnout.
Posted by dnusay (2 years 7 months ago)
While the video was very cool to watch, he risked lots of peoples lives... making the video not cool at all.
Posted by tony (2 years 7 months ago)
so what if he risked peoples lives, it was a cool video. people die everyday for dumber reasons.
Posted by doed (2 years 7 months ago)
pretty cool
Posted by greatergood (2 years 7 months ago)
as long as he didn't risk your life, right tony? idiot.
impressive driving skills on display. cobble streets have such great traction
Posted by al (2 years 7 months ago)
Inspirational.
Posted by The Anonymous Poster (2 years 7 months ago)
So if your mother or girlfriend was crossing the street when this idiot flies through blowing the red light, you'd be perfectly OK with that?
Posted by anindya (2 years 7 months ago)
Wow! It took my breath away.
Posted by jpublico (2 years 7 months ago)
It seems like he is using the sound of the motor as a horn when he comes up to blind intersections or red lights. Unless this is just normal down shifting rev's.
Posted by tom (2 years 7 months ago)
Tony, that was the dumbest comment I have ever heard anyone say. Ever.
Posted by Trevor (2 years 7 months ago)
I guess this guy didn't know that you can already do this in video games
Posted by Law (2 years 7 months ago)
Top speed about 80mph (130 km). Look at the dashed lines and buildings. Note how slowly he approaches cars. Still they could steal the idiots award away from the suicide bomber. DNA test the car and throw the bums in jail for about 20 years.
Posted by Minnesota Tishman (2 years 7 months ago)
I'm using the chicken to measure it!
Posted by hushy (2 years 7 months ago)
Dude, that is an animated mov. Notic the red light from the rear lights.
Posted by rubix (2 years 7 months ago)
The Anonymous Poster: "So if your mother or girlfriend was crossing the street when this idiot flies through blowing the red light, you'd be perfectly OK with that?"
I probably wouldn't be ok, but let's put this in perspective. 1) Sunday Morning, 2)1978, 3)He slowed down in areas were he had the chance of hitting people, 4) The driver is a professional
Posted by dirtypj (2 years 7 months ago)
the driver and film maker are total assholes. they should both be banned from driving for the rest of their lives. still, if he only knocked over and killed french people i wouldn't complain. ;-)
Posted by Andrew (2 years 7 months ago)
That was actually me driving the car. You should see the videos I made going through Rome and Monaco! ;)
Posted by Dane (2 years 7 months ago)
Yes sure it was you ;)
Posted by cm (2 years 7 months ago)
it is impressive but what an fool! very selfish to be doing something like that if it risks others lives. keep it on the track. no need to add to the dumb reasons people die for either.
Posted by Paulinho (2 years 7 months ago)
The film was recreated only a few years ago.... using a standard BMW... it was done in a far quicker time.. yet the BMW driver didn't really risk anything... and didn't speed anywhere near as high as the claimed Ferrari Driver !!
The fact that the camara was mounted so low makes it seem fast.. its actually not.. shame...
Posted by Nugget (2 years 7 months ago)
dirtypj - the film-maker was arrested then released but the identity of the driver was, and still is, unknown.
I remember the first time I saw it in the eighties (on betamax!!), took my breath away and still does. Incredible piece of driving that's unlikely to ever be repeated.
I'm a police traffic officer now and I'm envious of the guys skill. He's safer than 99% of the idiots I see everyday!
Posted by Sven (2 years 7 months ago)
C'est magnifique mais ce b'est pas le GetAway in Stockholm...... any anyone..who was going to kill...just some frenchies anyway....
Posted by jox (2 years 7 months ago)
F1 drivers do crazy stuff like this all the time -- guess thats why they're in F1.
It doesn't look very fast at some points, he slowly passes cars which means either he wasn't going much faster than the other cars or French people drive really fast. But wow, what a sound!
If you listen carefully, you can keep track of each gear shift and down shift (when he double clutches). On the first straight, he completely tears it up and you can hear how long the 4th and 5th gear are (i'm guessing 5th because he downshifts 3times). This is a good indicator of how fast he really was going on the more congested streets compared to the all out throttle. Kudos for not dying/killing.
Posted by bucephalus (2 years 7 months ago)
I think the real outrage here is that the city of france wouldn't give him a permit to do it when there weren't people on the road, but they'll gladly take the publicity from the "Illegally" shot film. I'm sure someone somewhere in the office where he was supposed to get a permit gave him a nod and a wink saying that he probably wouldn't be seen if he were to do it at this time of day and on these streets.
Posted by Taxi to real street (2 years 7 months ago)
Its just camera trickery, mount a camera 3inchs from the ground on anything and it seems fast, especially if you slow down the frame rate a bit. Add a sound track from a Ferrari and you have the finished piece. I overtook a tracker at 70mph the other day, and it was a lot faster then this guy was overtaking things. Also, a Ferrari would never have been able to mount that curb, it would have been beached.
Posted by Al (2 years 7 months ago)
wow I like how everyone is getting very angry about this guy doing this rediculous thing. Wake up people, this was in 1978. Complaining about how dangerous this was is just stupid. It's a tight ass video and there is nothing that you can do (no matter how much you complain) to stop idiots from risking other peoples lives. sorry. Now sit down and shut up.
Posted by No Harm, No Foul (2 years 7 months ago)
Nobody died. It was entertaining and the statute of limitations is probably up on it by now.
Posted by mum (2 years 7 months ago)
what a silly boy
Posted by Caleb (2 years 7 months ago)
The country didn't help by denying him a permit for a closed coursed, so the country is partially to blame. Nice video...
Posted by bobbywan (2 years 7 months ago)
that motor sounds AMAZING! I'm booting up Burnout Revenge now!
Posted by Bollinger (2 years 7 months ago)
The sound track is fake, which means the whole movie is probably fake too.
6:04 you can hear an obvious fade over from one engine track to another.
Also the kerb mounting @ 5:24 would at minimum mess up the alloys, probably more..
Nice try.
Bollinger.

There's a photo of the car and the director. It's a Mercedes sedan with a camera rigged to the grille. Undercranked and with the addition of F1 engine sounds it seems as if he's going much, much faster than he really is.
Posted by bricks (2 years 7 months ago)
that was tight.
and, no harm, no foul. if all people driving like jackasses were that good at it, life would be much sweeter.

Posted by marc_l (2 years 7 months ago)
he needed 64seconds to drive down the Champs-Elysees from arc de triomphe to place de la concorde. a distance for about 1900 meter. that means an average speed of about 110km/h for this part.

Listen to the noises coming from the wheels in curves. In a RWD car , you have to lose traction in order to hear that noise , which results in oversteering , but there's no oversteering in the video. Either the car is not RWD (that means it's not a Ferrari) or the sounds are not original sounds of the video. Plus , in straight he gives full throttle , a car like that should accelerate really fast as the revs go up , but it doesn't. The car sometimes keeps the same speed even when the revs are going up...
Posted by (2 years 7 months ago)
@master
Posted by brec (2 years 7 months ago)
@master
a) That is definitely on a 12 cylinder.
b) You can squeel the fronts in a rwd with understeer which is what was in the video.
c) The acceleration is probably just hard to notice, its certainly there everywhere I watched (and heard revs increasing).
Posted by Anonymous (2 years 7 months ago)
That was pathetic, it is truley sad that the world is filled with twats who are just as immature that will copy that pointless and pathetic video.
Posted by Clarkbar (2 years 7 months ago)
That suspension looks a little sloppy for a 78 ferarri. Bounces a little much. The gyroscope kept the sway down but couldnt do anything about the up and down. My bet is that it's not a ferrari

Posted by Fake (2 years 7 months ago)
This movie is a big fake, it wasn't shot with a ferrari.
Its a shame really that the story is a load of bullshit as Claude Lelouch didn't actually mount a camera to a 275gtb, rather he mounted it to a shabby looking old mercedes and just added the 275GTB sound to it and synched it in to match. The whole thing wasn't shot in 9mins and he didnt hit 140mph...

I you look by Google, you find more about this famous video. It is real. It was said, the only place they faked was the exit from Louvre. There they had a extra person with walkie talkie to inform the dirver, that the road is clear to go full speed.

i don't think he went that fast. I myself went 135+ on the 280 in california bay area and things went way faster then that.

Very cool...reminds me of racing scenes by Steve McQueen in LeMans movie...and A Man and Woman...but I don't really think anyone could do this today(2006) as Paris Streets are a whole lot busier than 1978...none the less...great footage fo unique driving...
Posted by berni (2 years 7 months ago)
I like this driving style... it would be fun to do that in barcelona (montjuich) nowadays, or other sites of F1 inspiration like Monaco or Clermont-Ferrand road...

It's to bad that so many people still need a gasoline motor under their ass to have fun.

First of all a Merc would of rolled all over the place even at 20mph, the sound is a little too accurate to be fake in my opinion, as for when he mounted the curb ... have u ever seen a 275? its not that low and the rims arent that big. This person knows how to drive no matter what car he is in, and he did run throught red light nearly hit pedestrians and other cars. I think saying that the car was a ferrari just made it more interesting, can u imagine if they said it was a mercedes or bmw, people would of said who gives a rats ass. And besides if you ever see get away in stockholm the cosworth and the supra dont go that much faster then this, even when the supra is doin 300km down the free way.
This movie is a pioneer in a line of many crazy driving movies. The facts are simple, the guy speeds he dodges red light, cars and pedestrians, drives on the wrong side of the road and treats that car like his bitch!
Excellent Driving
Excellent Sound
Excellent Car (whatever it may be)!
Posted by Rafi (2 years 6 months ago)
That sound.... I could watch it a thousand times.
Posted by real time (2 years 6 months ago)
you're all wrong. 1978 in France wasn't a time for fakes. This is the real deal.
Posted by perry (2 years 6 months ago)
that was nice. very good drivein lovein it all the way.....
Posted by therion (2 years 6 months ago)
Awesome driving. I love it. Hopefully no amateurs try it.
To the ones who are outraged and think the vid is stupid for endangering lives: you endanger your own lives just by sitting under the sun. You endanger yourselves and others when you drink or smoke.
Great film, very fun ending too.
Posted by therion (2 years 6 months ago)
Oh, yes. I love Getaway in Stockholm. I still have it!!
Posted by pendy (2 years 6 months ago)
That's one of the coolest videos I've ever seen, even if it wasn't a Ferarri(I'm a Mercedes man anyways.) I'd love to recreate that in my 190e, and I'd probly destroy the time too, but I can't drive with near the skill of that guy. Simply amazing.
Posted by Polarbear (2 years 6 months ago)
Made in 1978, as impressive, as if were yesterday. Those were the days, remember the original "gone in 60 seconds". Hats off to the driver, hope he is still alive and laughing at the memory of the blistering drive.
Posted by Chakal (2 years 6 months ago)
I bet one of my arms that this driver was Gilles Villeneuve...The Prince Of Speed.
Only this guy could jump in such crazy adventure.
Posted by George (2 years 6 months ago)
I would have to agree with John. You all sound like a bunch of women.
WHA! he almost hit people. WHA! its fake.
Shut up already. This was an excellent video regardless of vehicle make or dubbed sound.
Posted by Sneakers (2 years 5 months ago)
Of course it's real. And none of it is dubbed. And as for its safety, give me a break. Risk is a factor in everything.

Unlikely to be a total fake. What was the worst that would happen if the driver & producer were caught? Devil's Island? At the end of the day the driving was not faked and does anyone say that this was crap driving? I have heard tale that it is James Hunt, you remember the guy who won a GP whilst pissed, or was that faked too?
Posted by Favex (1 year 11 months ago)
The name of the driver is Jean Pierre Jabouille.
Posted by big ed (1 year 9 months ago)
Careful analysis of this movie reveals it was made at 40 mph and the engine sound dubbed. A Ferrari wound out in fifth gear would be doing 170 and the landscape would be blurred.
Posted by Ben (1 year 5 months ago)
check out fifth gear (UK show) season 11 ep 3, they talk about this video. Basically it's an impressive bit of film, but the camera was mounted *very* low on the Old mercedes that the director owned :)
Posted by Ted (9 months 28 days ago)
See the Wikipedia entry which explains that the speed never exceeds 140km/h (85mph) and that it was likely made in a Mercedes and then dubbed with the Ferrari sound. Nonetheless, it is a very cool video which I first saw in 1981.
