WTF? Does everyone in Russia drive like idiots or is that tunnel soaked with oil? It looked like nearly every accident happened the same way...someone driving to fast and then totally loosing traction.

I bet there's a depression or drop in the road coupled with the corner. Any slight dip at high speeds and a car flies-and people freak! Add to that the turn and the backend fishtails (tapping the breaks makes it worse b/c front tires dig in and lift the rear).

1. The tunnel is quite narrow, especially the left lane: about 2.3m
2. Most crashs happened when dirivers changed lanes: this is stricly prohibited in all tunnels
3. Speeding: the record of the tunnel is 236km/h
I drive that tunnel from time to time. It is 3km long, which is 3 minutes driving.

It seems there is a side road on that tunnel... (Look at the 2 trucks... You clearly can see a truck coming form the right side...
Do there is an engineer (a guy who thinks he knows everything but can do nothing) designed a crossing in that f*cking tunnel??
I would scare me dead if I see something moving in that side tunnel and then is slipping not far away...

This is worse than the driving in Africa - where drivers, it seems, feel obligated for some reason to drive as FAST AS POSSIBLE in old run-down vehicles on the worst imaginable roads. ... The drivers here seem to drive with the thought, "Gosh, I got'a nice car; the road ain't bad ... let's go fast." Idiots! I don't know if you've been in an accident, but it ain't fun and it's awfully painful. ... The jerk driving the bus must have drunk.

Disecting the truck crash, you can see that there is an access tunnel from the right WITH some sort of a divider/guard rail between the main road.

The truck on the main road (205) blocks that access tunnel and swerves away to the left to avoid.

The truck in the access must have blown through the divider and into traffic at 30+ MPH!

What a mess. ER? Do you remember the access road?

Well, the title of the clip is 'Lefortovo-tunnel fatalities', so I'm guessing the outcome of some of these accidents is not so good.

Looks like some of the problem is off-camber road. Other factors may be tire treads filled with ice & snow, and excessive speed. And road surface coated with oil from previous accidents.

You won't catch me driving in that tunnel in anything this side of a T-34.

That's freakin' hilarious...I can't figure out why all those drivers kept sliding out. The bus part had me on the floor laughing. I imagine both the truck drivers were mangled beyond recognition, and probably killed.

Some great examples of 'Lift off oversteer' there, nice tune too, a great clip! It just goes to show when you enter a bend and you think you're going too quick, if at all possible keep your foot planted, backing off or braking causes big problems, you can't blame the road, it's the imbeciles driving on it.

It is several causes, Not all the people traveling faster than posted limit. Light braking can cause loss of control on the slick concrete surface. downward slop and curve also are problem. clip with two truck, first truck spun in front of other. was smashed between other truck and wall.

Wow... I can't possibly imagine how that bus got to the starter situation. It didn't hit the left wall, becouse it was traveling in the right side lane. It didn't hit the right wall either, becouse the arrival angle to the cameras view is slightly bending right. And if the bloody idiot just wanted to change to the centeal lane, why did he pull the wheel back to the right? That caused the hole problem... first when I saw this video, I couldn't beleave this is real. What was that busdriver thinking?? Articulated buses have their own speed limits. Crazy animal! And yes: I agree with the oily road theoree. There must be something with the road. Most of the accidents began with cars skidding in an unreal measure from just hitting the brakes. Gosh... I'm surprised, that Russian police aren't standing in every meter and in front of the tunnel... Crazy driving!

I just read another forum. It says the camera is mounted after a sharp curve. This explains it all... And if you stop the video at 00:20, you can se an arrow sign, which is shortly after crashed by the car. The arrow is the evidence. (http://www.metafilter.com/mefi/49063) Realise how drivers got immunity of accidents. Just after the two trucks spread the whole width of the tunnel, the Mercedes starts changing lane imedietly to go along... these accidents must be every day over there.

If I look at the truck accident, I can see that the truck coming from side is actualy backing out of the side lane. Look at it carefully, if you stop it where you can see the two trucks paralel to the wall, you can see the red text trailer (which came from the side) is facing towards the camera. So the truck with the 205 number on the back must have hit the back. (I doubt it is able to go up to 205 km/h)

yo guys, the cars slip b/c of poor construction of the tunnel. As the water drops down on frozen roads, it turns into ice.... But yeah, they still drive like nuts!

Give me a break! This has to be a hoax. There's a cut right in the middle of the truck crash and I don't see the access tunnel that everyone is talking about-- as if there'd ever be a side tunnel that large in a tunnel (do they need groceries delivered?). Besides the second truck would never come all way of a side tunnel even if there was one-- it would just get jammed against the side.

It's obviously doctored. Maybe it's some old KGB forgery dudes with a ample vodka and too much time on their hands.

So many crashes in a day, that tunnel is dangerous! Don't drive through it in winter.

People who DRINK then DRIVE...

- do not know what speed they are going
- fall asleep at the wheel
- drive erratically when others around them drive dangerously.

in all cases here the sober driver are also suddenly faced with a dangerous driver!

The two trucks that you have seen collided because one of the trucks was changing lanes from middle to right and hit the other that was speeding down the right lane, i think it happened because there was a slight turn there in the tunnel which prevented one of the drivers or both to see each others trucks...it's like you can't really see who'e standing behind the wall kind of thing.

it's all going down to russian engineering i think...uneven road lanes, wet track, crooked road...but drivers themselves has part in this too, speeding, not keeping distance, not using signals, jerking the wheel too often (unexperienced). Imagine now if the permitted speed in this tunnel was no more than say 20mph, and this was strictly enforced...we wouldn't have been discussing this video now.

Ok,for the people that think this is not real, guess again. I have been through this tunnel and if you have ever been to Russia and experienced their driving habits, you would surely understand. Snow, water, oil, etc. obviously contribute to making a bad situation worse. But make no mistake about it, accidents like the ones you see here, happen in the dead heat of summer as well. Drivers in Russia, particularly Taxi drivers, change lanes abruptly even when they don't have to, and all of this at extremely high speeds. By the way, they will make a lane where there isn't one, hence the Trucks. The Bus driver obviously is stupid, however, nailing the gas after the fact was the right thing to do and otherwise, he would have never been able to regain control. Vodka is only a part of the problem. These guys drive like idiots even without the help of Vodka. No one wears seatbelts and when it comes to Taxis, the Police turn a blind eye. They are paid to look the other way. The term "fast taxi" means just that. For the foreigner, they think "well it is inherently faster than taking a bus", however this is not the case at all. They mean "FAST TAXI" period. Taxi drivers pride themselves on their ability to get from point A to B in record time. Also they make more fares in a day. If you are on a single lane road, going up a hill, around a curve, or both at the same time, they will use the oncoming lane anyway. Brakes are a last resort and only used if there is no real estate to drive on. Sidewalks are fair game. I took a Taxi once from Domodevedo Airport to Sheremetyevo Airport which is on different sides of the city and we averaged 100 mph, I am not talking km/h either. I complemented the guy on his car as most of the Taxi's are pure junk. He looked me straight in the face and said "Good Driver Too" while pointing at the Clock on the dash. If you are a thrill seeker, go to Moscow and take a Taxi, Disney World has nothing on these guys.
