I came across this blog, which has a link to an article, talking about how SUV's and even Hummers cause less damage than hybrids, during production. Check it out. http://arv43.wordpress.com/2007/03/08/have-you-h

So where do we draw the line?
Glass takes more energy to recycle than it saves thus polluting the environmnet even more than making new glass does (reusing is of course the ideal).
If a car uses less polluting fossel fuels but costs slightly more to make (environmentally speaking) how long do we look at to see if the "green scales" balance?

The concept of suggesting that the fact that Hummers produce less waste during production as a justification for why it's OK to drive SUV's is utterly ludicrous.

PHEV is 'plug-in' hybrid electric vehicle (a mod some are doing to their cars), not 'petroleum'

Pathetic article. Talk about cupcake journalism.

How about dealing with the most interesting disclaimer, that they aren't economically sound?

This being, lets say it takes 5 years at 15K miles per year to make it cost effective compared to a non-hybrid that gets 40 MGP. Now add in the cost of a replacement battery pack at 100K miles, and you just lost your economy. Note, my example may not have the right numbers, but the issue is there: The extra cost initially, then the replacement battery pack cost.

A really bland and not very informative article.
How about some real meat? What are pluin hybrids? What is the range of pay back periods you mentioned?
What is the average range of the various ones.
How many have been sold ?
I would reccomend you chage the title to overview of todays hybrids..This doesn't even come close to "everything"

Although interesting, it was mistitled. It was far from "All you need to know...".

What a crapy article. Obviously the person who wrote this article has no knowlege of the auto industry or how a hybrid car actually works.

What is the environmental impact from the batteries in a hybrid? They have to be recycled or disposed of somewhere eventually. How does this compare to the impact of an environmentally aware gas or diesel car? Uniformed editorial. Do you work for the New York Times?

Very pedestrian and uninformative article considering the title. What about the Tesla? What about the details of variable transmissions and brake recharging? Go to Consumer Reports if you want to see real info about hybrids.

@weirdstory:
read your article carefully and you will understand, that this is not a objective article. Looks like someone like to persuade the way it is - furthermore is just a comment (first line of the article)

@phil: is your Money all you are afraid of? For sure there is no reason to drive fuel-saving cars, if you don't consider the aspect of environment - but you should.

At last - the Prius is ugly. Really it is. It will not help, if car manufactures will create some "environment friendly" car, which look as friendly as a rainbow in heaven.
They simply should make interesting cars with lots of emotion (for some people the 911, for others the m3 or a Hummer etc.), but they should consider Mother Nature!
And the consumer should do the same - But do not force someone to drive a Prius.
btw, i am driving a mercedes... smart. And i will not suggest anyone byuing that plastic lobster ;)

ok, but in that article they're talking about cost per mile, and they assume a hummer will last 300 000 while a prius will last 100 000, seems kinda biased to me.
