And could someone explain to me how this is a business that operates on "already thin margins" and a situation where it should constantly be receive tax incentives and breaks?

To bad Exxon does not set the price of oil.
It drills, extracts, refines, and ships.
Commodity markets set the prices, Exxon sells it's gas based on the price of the markets.
Your story is inaccurate and misleading.

That sets their base price. The amount on top of production is their profit, and you can clearly see, they've been gouging us big time. Don't fall for the obfuscation of the oil companies. If they were just passing on the extra price of crude, then their profit would stay the same for a given quantity of gasoline, and the price would only fluctuate to reflect the extra production costs, not the profit. We have obviously been getting the screwing of our life. The obscene profit tells the tale.
