Volkswagen Passat Commercial - Critique
« Back to articlePosted by enzo (3 years 1 month ago)
I've been in an accident once, and I think they should be banned.

why should they be banned? accidents are a fact of life, and volkswagen is just trying to show that their cars are safe. no one gets hurt, and everything is all good..
and btw - the girls are talking about previous vw commercials with the same theme (not sure everyone knows, cause the description here doesnt mention this)

additionally, the accident doesnt *appear* to be caused by the girls who are driving, but by someone broadsiding them, this advert ONLY highlights how safe the vehicle is, there is no implication of stereotyping, which could be the only reason for banning this advert

good point

It's quite a violent ad - even if nobody gets hurt - and should be classed accordingly i.e. show it at a suitable time etc. Personally, I don't like it but I'm not into censorship. Using shock and fear tactics are a cheap way to win people over in the world of advertising....

This is one of several VW ads (seen in the USA) which feature an accident. It's shocking the first time, and personally, I found it unpleasant. However, banning is a bit extreme. The market will decide. If the ad improves VW sales, it will continue. If there is no or a negative response, then they will disappear.
In the big picture, I prefer the realism of these ads compared to the "indestructible" ads now seen in America for Toyota trucks and the Mercedes GL. In each case, the vehicles are subjected to large scale violence and emerge unscathed. The tiny disclamer reveals "not representative of actual crash performance ..." No kidding.

There's no reason to censor these ads, even though they're obnoxious. I don't plan on buying a VW any time soon.

I love the add.....it makes sense...as far as talking about the previous commercials that accidents can occur even while in a still car...i love these adds

Using fear to sell a product is sleezy.

why would this be banned? like jurand said getting into a car wreck is a fact of life. People these days get way to worked up over something that in the long run wont even matter, and i dont think they are using fear to sell their car, its just showing that in an accident thats most likely whats going to happen. Just because you got in an accident one time is no reason to ban the ad. Someone close to me was killed by a drunk driver, am i going to ban beer? I'm only 14 and sometimes i think i have more common sence then you guys that want to ban it. Lighten up a little bit

The only comment I have about these ads are that after each "accident" there is the word spoken - "holy... - ". That is very disturbing to me and I do not see any reasoning for that to be spoken. The word holy is ONLY to be reference to God, not to be used in slang or cursing as the commercial is doing. The dictionary states holy as belonging to or coming from God, hallowed. I feel your commercial is very good and gets its point across before the offending word is spoken at the end. If you could PLEASE remove it, it is very offensive to all things pertaining to Christianity, I would be very appreciative. Thank you very much for this opportunity to voice my opinion. Sincerely, Hope Wright
